Spirit of Yoga - Sacred Geometry in Yoga

What is Sacred Geometry?

Sacred geometry is the study of geometric patterns or shapes that are believed to hold symbolic and spiritual significance, representing the fundamental principles of creation and the universe. This ancient concept ascribes sacred meanings to certain geometric proportions and shapes, associating them with the idea of a divine universal creator or ‘geometer’. It is believed that understanding and aligning with these patterns can provide insights into the nature of reality, foster spiritual growth, and reveal the interconnectedness of all things.

Yoga and Sacred Geometry

Yoga and sacred geometry share a profound connection. It is not merely about achieving aesthetic shapes on the mat. It's a spiritual journey that aligns the body with the fundamental patterns of creation. It is the recognition that the patterns found in nature and the cosmos are reflected in our own bodies and movements, interconnecting our physical bodies with the mathematical principles that underpin the universe. For instance, the circle is thought to represent unity and infinity, the square symbolises stability and the physical realm, while the triangle signifies balance, harmony and completion.

Sacred Geometry in Common Yoga Poses

If you want to experience the perfect unity and infinity of the sacred geometric circle in your practice, consider Child's Pose (Balasana), which is thought to represent the first cell. Downward Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) and Triangle Pose (Trikonasana) both form a geometric triangle, representing balance and harmony.

The Divine Fibonacci Spiral

One of the most talked about concepts in sacred geometry is the Fibonacci sequence, which appears throughout nature, representing the golden ratio. This mathematical pattern is thought to be observed in certain yoga poses. For instance, Half Moon (Chandrasana) and Goddess Pose (Utkata Konasana) are thought to embody the divine proportions of the Fibonacci spiral.

Connect with the Strength and Wisdom of the Universe

By consciously aligning our bodies with these sacred geometric patterns during yoga practice, we can aspire to experience the interconnectedness of all life, increase our connection with the divine and radiate peace from the inside out.

Next Time You Are on the Mat

Try mindful alignment as a technique to bring sacred geometry to your practice. Pay attention to the geometric shapes your body creates in different poses. Visualise geometric patterns like the Fibonacci spiral or Platonic solids during meditation or while holding poses. Then take it up a level and create full yoga sequences that progress through different geometric shapes, mirroring the patterns found in nature. You can also consider using Fibonacci numbers to count and regulate your breath during poses or meditation, counting for 5, 8, 13, or 21 breaths.

What do the experts say?

Deepak Chopra emphasises that sacred geometry reflects the interconnectedness of all things, mirroring the principle that "everything outside is mirrored within, and everything within is mirrored outside." This aligns with his broader philosophy that the universe and individual consciousness are deeply intertwined.

Eckhart Tolle does not directly address sacred geometry in his teachings, however, Tolle emphasises the importance of being fully present and aware in the current moment. Sacred geometry, with its intricate patterns and symmetry, can serve as a focal point for meditation and mindfulness practices, potentially cultivating the present moment awareness and stillness required to obtain a state of inner peace.

By embracing the sacred geometry of yoga, you can deepen your spiritual connection, enhance understanding of the practice, and align with the fundamental patterns of the universe.
